Eco-tourism Gaining Momentum

Eco-tourismEco-tourism is the new cool way to travel for the trendy. While not something that I would actively pursue, you can not argue with the concept. Essentially, eco-tourism is a form of travel that is built around assimilating within the local environment and people. It is not lets go teach the natives how to be “ecologically correct”, but more to lets explore the natural beauty of a country in its own way. Lots of hiking and exploring the jungles, as opposed to beaching and pina coladas.

Impressed by the success of countries like Costa Rica and Ecuador, which have lured flocks of travelers for mountain treks and jungle safaris, a growing number of regions across the globe are turning to eco-tourism as a strategy for economic growth.

Omar Bongo, the president of Gabon, a developing country in west central Africa, has set aside about 10 percent of the country’s landmass for 13 national parks. Green Visions, a tourism and environment protection company, based in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, is pioneering an eco-tourism development plan in Central Europe with “green adventures” that promote environmental principles and support local businesses. Even Greece, better known for its pumping night life and archaeological monuments, devotes a section of its national tourism Web site to “Greek nature” and eco-tourism.

Over the last four years, at least 48 countries, from Puerto Rico to Portugal, have created or started to define a national strategy for eco-tourism development, according to a 2004 eco-tourism report by Mintel International Group, a market-research company based in Britain.via New York Times.

Mississippi Allowing Casinos on Land Leads to Optimism

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina left Mississippi Casinos and communities destroyed and facing a bleak picture. The law that required the casinos to be floating would put the states largest economic engine in the face of storms every season. Fortunately, the Governor Hayley Barbour and the legistlature have recognized this, and now have passed a resolution allowing Casinos to be build on dry land.

The Governor’s Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal plans to release a report Dec. 9 on the state of the recovery in Mississippi with recommendations on how to proceed with further recovery efforts. < ?xml:namespace prefix =”" o ns =”" “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

“My expectation is a very aggressive goal set in terms of the destination,” Richer said. “And there is an extremely high amount of public and private investment coming in largely because of the change in the (casino) law,” which now allows casinos to be built within 800 feet of the water, instead of being required to be in the water. via Travel Weekly

Lets hope for the sake of the economy and the region, that the casinos can regain their footing in Southern Mississippi and revitilize the economic engine of the region.

.travel Domain Open for Business for the Tralliance Corporation

A new .travel on-line domain name will be available for the travel industry. This domain may give some users a sense of confidence; however, it is the internet and all should use due diligence when using. The following travel and tourism industries will be able to use the .travel domain. Pretty soon we will have on-line domain names for just about everything.

Airlines, theme parks, restaurants, tourism offices and others in travel and tourism are eligible for Web sites and e-mail addresses ending in “.travel.”

The new domain could give consumers confidence that they are dealing with a legitimate travel business or group, though the mantra of “buyer beware” applies: Operators of the domain won’t be performing any credit or criminal background checks or offering any guarantees.

There does seem to be some issues with the new .travel format as they are only allowing travel businesses to use the domain name and not the largest sector who search for travel on the internet, those that post their stories.

Those approved were allowed to register and use “.travel” names starting Monday.

Although Tralliance Corporation billed the domain as an on-line space for the global travel and tourism community, travel journalist and author Edward Hasbrouck criticized the rules, saying they exclude travelers at the expense of promoting travel businesses.

“The domain appears to exclude the participation of the largest class of people who use the Internet to travel — people who use the Internet to post their travel stories and photos and all sorts of things,” Hasbrouck said.

Approval is made on a case-by-case basis, he said.

So far, many of the eligible travel sectors are in transportation, including airlines, bus operators, cruise lines and passenger rail lines, a group that covers suburban commuter lines but not city subway systems. Also eligible are hotels, casinos, camp facilities, travel agents and providers of travel technologies.

To prevent overlap with “.aero,” an existing domain for the aviation industry, airports and aerospace companies don’t qualify — but airlines do.
