Dining in Santa Fe, New Mexico - The Best of Southwestern Cuisine

The New York Times Travel Section features 4 world class restaurants that feature some of the best southwestern cuisine you can imagine. The is not your El-Ranchero rice, beans, mystery meat in a wrap Tex Mex. This is the real stuff, and it sounds tantalizing.

Southwestern food is one of the pleasures of New Mexico, seeming to rise from the very land itself, at one with the adobe walls and piñón bushes. Santa Fe is full of restaurants, from haute cuisine to hole-in-the-wall, which have made it their mission to maintain or develop this heart-warming (and sometimes tongue-burning) food.

Mark Miller’s famous Coyote Cafe, Casa Sena in its elegant old adobe palace and the chic SantacafĆ© two blocks from the plaza are world-class restaurants, and La Choza, Maria’s and Tia Sophia’s are local institutions. Whether you’re on a spree or a budget, Santa Fe will fix any craving for chili. The following four places all offer something distinct. - New York Times.

Georgia Aquarium - Washington Post Review

BelugaThe Washington Post reviewed the Georgia Aquarium this past Sunday and have come out very positively for the Aquarium. From the review:

At Ocean Voyager, we were enthralled by a tunnel through the world’s biggest aquarium tank, which holds 6.2 million gallons and nearly 100,000 fish. Another viewing window was the size of a drive-in movie screen, and it gave knockout views of sawfish, giant grouper and schools of tiny golden trevallies that swarmed the whale sharks. Of the trevallies, we wondered: “Um, guys, should you get so close to the mouth?”

Still, the Cold Water gallery was our favorite, with its enormous, robotic-looking Japanese spider crabs, playful otters, creepy octopus and sea lions zipping around like chunky torpedoes. Our all-aquarium favorite? The belugas, whose graceful motions seemed almost choreographed.

CONCLUSION: It’s a little pricey, but the Georgia Aquarium is well worth a visit. The “biggest” status largely derives from the Ocean Voyager tank, which has more than three-quarters of the aquarium’s water and most of its fish. And it works: We felt immersed in a slice of ocean.

We are going next week, so I will give a more thorough first person report. We will have 3 generations at the aquarium, so it should give me a good idea  of the successes and pitfalls that you will face visiting.

Dining at Disney: Best Food at Walt Disney World

If you are planning on going to Walt Disney World this winter, try these restaurants. Southern Living sent a team down and came back with these results.

  • Jiko: Disney’s Animal Kingdom
This restaurant is a warm and visually stunning spot tucked into the lowest level of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Resort. Jiko specializes in African cooking, spices, and wines. It’s creative, surprising, and true to many of the traditional flavors of Africa.
  • Liberty Tree Tavern: Magic Kingdom
Cinderella’s (in the castle) may be the prime place to see a Disney character, but Liberty Tree Tavern at lunch is the best spot in the Magic Kingdom for a bit of calm. In the heart of Liberty Square, you’ll find a building straight out of Williamsburg. But don’t be taken aback by ye ole atmosphere. Liberty Tree Tavern boasts a fresh, healthful menu and highly efficient waitstaff
  • The Hollywood Brown Derby: Disney-MGM Studios
Though the West Coast original no longer graces Hollywood and Vine, its legacy lives on in meticulously reproduced detail at Disney-MGM Studios. The decor itself is a treat–burnished wood, beamed ceilings, Gothic-style sconces, and heavy curtains recall the golden age of Hollywood.

If you are on the property, dial 55 to get the restaurant reservation line. If you are planning to go to Walt Disney World, you can make  a reservation up to 90 days ahead of time by calling 407–939– 3463.
