Clyfford Still Museum Coming to Denver

Clyfford_stillThe Clyfford Still Museum is coming to Denver after a competition amongst many cities to host his work. This is a win for Denver and the new museum will be built near the present Denver Art Museum in the Golden Triangle neighborhood. When completed, the museum is expected to be a 30,000 square foot space that will exhibit over 800 paintings of Clyfford Stills collection of work.

Still, a key figure in the painting movement of abstract expressionism, died in 1980 at 75. His will dictated that his body of work be donated to the city that would construct a museum in which to show them. After attempts by other cities to land the Still artwork, Denver struck a deal with the estate in 2004.
Dean Sobel, project director for the Clyfford Still Museum, anticipates the museum will open in 2009.
The site chosen is on three parcels of land on the east side of Bannock Street between 12th and 13th avenues, in Denver’s Golden Triangle neighborhood. The center parcel is owned by David Clifton Ministries, which has agreed to sell the land to the city for $910,000. The ministry would continue to lease the property from Denver through June 2007. The parcels to the north and south are owned by the Denver Art Museum, which has reached an informal agreement with the city to buy the land. via The Denver Business Journal .
